We just installed the Bella grass in our backyard a week ago and it’s already starting to grow! You can pull a plug out and see the roots already reaching out! We went with close 6″ spacing so that hopefully the lawn will fill in before winter so that the dogs aren’t dragging in a bunch of mud into the house. For about 900 square feet of space at 6″ spacing we used about 31.5 trays in the 72 size, and it took 3 people a weekend to complete installation (not including removing the old lawn and treating it for weeds). I’ll keep you updated on it’s status!
Is Bella Grass available in sod form? or plugs?
Do you install?
How many are planted in a square foot?
We only sell Bella Bluegrass in 72 count plug trays. I would recommend planting the Bluegrass between 6-9″ apart since it is a slower grower compared to the UCVerde Buffalograss.
So how did it turn out after all these years? any raves or complaints? how much water do ya think it uses a week?
Hi Jared! We actually have removed in favor of bark for the base of a playground set for our daughters. We were having issues with other grasses and weeds over taking the Bella – I’m not sure if it’s because we have two large trees that overhand over the area and lots of birds and squirrels probably bringing in other vegetation with them. Before we tore it out, it was probably only about 50% Bella grass and 50% who knows what! haha We actually stopped carrying Bella grass quite awhile ago as there was not much interest and we now just focus on UC Verde Buffalograss. You can try Todd Valley Farms, he may still carry the Bella grass, I know he carries quite a selection of grasses.
As far as raves and complaints – it was excellent for low maintenance in terms of not having to mow it! The best! Complaints were that we did have rust issues with it the first year – our daughter’s shoes would be orange tinted after playing on the lawn! But after the first year that seemed to disappear on its own. And we really didn’t save any water at all, not even a little. It did seem hard to keep other grasses and weeds from infesting our lawn – but to be honest we didn’t take the time to properly prepare the area to begin with by making sure that our previous lawn/weeds were totally eradicated before we planted, so that could have been why.
All in all, I’d say it was a great grass – good looking and little mowing required!
I read that if you water the Bella the weeds will grow. That you really have to not water or fertilize and then the lawn will thrive. Did you water it regularly?
Yes, I did water it regularly. I found that if you held back watering, the lawn really could not tolerate the lack of water very well.
